SERIOUSLY?!?

Still venting, guys. Sorry.

It’s hard to fail my class. It really is. Come to class, do the assignments, read the book. That’s it. That’s all. I do require a lot of writing, but, if you do it, you’ll pass. It’s almost guaranteed. In fact, I’ll go ahead and guarantee it, because those people who are DOING the work ARE passing.

What a novel concept!

You can imagine my frustration with three students who – SERIOUSLY – believe they’re going to pass because of their good looks and charm. I actually had one of them say that to me. It’s a shame, too, because he’s about to find out how wrong he is. Or the girl who told me that she can talk her way out of anything.

Do you SERIOUSLY believe that?

Or the kid who told me that his aunt died, which is why he wasn’t in class…ever. Oh, and Lord forgive me if I’m jumping to judgment, but his aunt died last quarter, too.

Have I mentioned my top excuses I’ve received? If not, I think now’s a time to bring ‘em out:

“I have to miss class today for a hair appointment.”

“My girlfriend came in town.”

“I got arrested…Does that count as an excused absence?”

Say it with me together, guys: SERIOUSLY?!?!?!?!

And why in the world am I more concerned with their grades than they are? Why am I the one sitting up late at night worried that they’re going to fail? Something is horribly wrong with this picture.

I seriously might choke some people today.

SERIOUSLY.

Oh, my.

I'd be pulling my hair out, too!

Hair appointments? Seriously? Ha! My profs would've shot me if I'd ever used that!

Good for you for standing your ground.

Hopefully the "good" kids far outweigh those "Seriously?!" students!!

Kids do seem to be more and more creative with their excuses these days. I do wonder why so many kids today fail to have a strong work ethic or pride in their work. They seem to just want to get by. I'm afraid that kids are always looking for shortcuts. Life will teach them quickly that hard work is what matters. Good for you that you are in their corner. Your dedication to their success will make an impression on them. I can understand your frustration.

Just a warning: I'm going to be mean. Your post caught me on a crabby day here goes...

“I have to miss class today for a hair appointment.”
"Your hair looks great, it'll go nice with the F you earned."

“My girlfriend came in town.”

"Really, It's a good thing she came now because she won't be your girlfriend for long, now that you failed out and most likely this isn't the only class you failed. You'll have your work cut out for you trying to get a JOB having failed out of school. No money for dates, no girlfriend. Bummer."

“I got arrested…Does that count as an excused absence?”

"Seems your career path is chosen good for you!"

These "kids" need to WAKE up and SMELL the thing called RESPONISBILITY!
Good Grief WHO raised these people?
They have NO idea what REAL life is cause everything was handed to them.
I say fail them. Like you said if they did the work they are gaurenteed to pass...you even TOLD them this.
If their stinkin parents aren't going to teach them responsibility it is up to the rest of us that have the chance.
SERIOUSLY. Hair? A dying aunt? Arrested??!?!? (what the hell?)
If that kid is so upset abput his aunt he should take it up with school and dely his education until he CAN handle it. You could recomend a good out patient psych-ward.
Rant on girlfriend.
Oh, but DO tell us about the looks on their faces when the find out they failed. Now that would be some reality show! HA.

A hair appt? Seriously? Puh-lease. They'll learn, but it may be too late. Some people just have to learn the hard way. I did.

because you are a teacher with a heart and you care...that's why you worry! it's a good thing, but can drive you nuts, i'm sure!

obviously those students got this far because nobody showed them any different. it's tough to have to be the one to show them how life really works!

those excuses are hilarious...seriously???? i would've never have graduated college with an attitude like that!!!!!

I can't believe they would think those would even fly. Or where in the world are their parents. A hair appointment. Too much for me.

God Bless you at you continue to be faithful to your job.

My favorite is the arrested excuse. I really think you should excuse him (her?) if they can provide the booking shot. :)

deep breath!

that reminds me of high school - we had block scheduling, so classes were 90 minutes.

i went to the orthodonist during geometry. i handed my teacher my doctor's excuse and she told me that she wasn't going to count me absent because she had students gone to the bathroom longer than that...

HAHA This is soo great. When you come in for B's b-day you and my mom soo need to exchange stories. Her's are the best and her class is easier than yours -- I was teaching it as a jr. in high school (well helping) and it's for teachers! You honestly can't fail her class if you just show up and every semster she has students who fail... stupid! Oh but that definately provided my humor for the day.

I think you nailed it when you stated that you care more than they do. For some people, they aren't paying for their education-- they feel it's a free ride and their parents are paying for it.

I'm not sure how you wake them up, but you have to make sure that you invest time in those that care, because if you don't, you're just setting yourself up for more frustration.
